La llibertat de premsa és un dels pilars fonamentals del sistema democràtic. Uns mitjans lliures de censura i d’amenaça per part dels governs garanteixen un sistema comunicatiu ric i divers i una ciutadania informada.
Som professionals compromesos amb un exercici responsable del periodisme, de la comunicació -inclosa la publicitat-, en un sentit ampli i la defensa de la llibertat d’expressió i la llibertat de premsa, principis fonamentals en una societat plural i democràtica. Uns principis reconeguts a la Declaració Universal dels Drets Humans (art. 19), el Conveni Europeu dels Drets Humans (art. 10) i a la Carta dels Drets Fonamentals de la Unió Europea (art. 11). Fins i tot a la Constitució Espanyola (art. 20).
En els darrers dies, i arran de la convocatòria i la campanya del referèndum de l’1 d’octubre i de l’actuació desproporcionada del govern espanyol per impedir-lo -malgrat la voluntat del Parlament i de la majoria de la ciutadania-, diverses associacions professionals han rebut denúncies de periodistes que han estat coaccionats o obligats a identificar-se durant la cobertura d’esdeveniments d’interès públic, pressions a les redaccions i advertiments judicials.
Aquests fets signifiquen un atac greu i frontal a la llibertat d’expressió i d’informació. Com a professionals del periodisme i de la comunicació, per respecte a la societat a la qual ens devem i servim, no ens podem permetre el silenci davant d’aquesta dinàmica. No es poden erosionar els drets fonamentals de la llibertat d’expressió i d’informació, i els mitjans públics i privats tenim el deure i el dret de treballar amb llibertat per a poder fer-nos-en ressò.
Per això, i d’acord amb els nostres principis deontològics, exigim la immediata aturada d’aquestes actuacions que amenacen la nostra feina, empobreixen la nostra capacitat d’informar amb qualitat, la llibertat dels nostres mitjans per emetre continguts publicitaris i amenacen drets fonamentals.
Fidels al nostre compromís amb el periodisme mostrem, també, el nostre compromís amb un model de societat en què la llibertat d’expressió i d’informació són part indestriable del conjunt de llibertats que cal garantir a totes i cadascuna de les persones que integrem la societat catalana. Són drets fonamentals i nosaltres i els mitjans pels quals treballem, actors, com d’altres institucions, garants de la seva salvaguarda.

For freedom of the press and for all freedoms #FreePressCatalonia
Freedom of the press is one of the fundamental pillars of the democratic system. A media free of censorship and threats by governments guarantee a rich and diverse communication system and an informed citizenship.
We are professionals committed to the responsible exercise of journalism and communication – including advertising – in a broad sense and to the defense of freedom of expression and freedom of the press, fundamental principles in a plural and democratic society. Principles recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (art. 19), the European Convention on Human Rights (art. 10) and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (Article 11). Even in the Spanish Constitution (art. 20).
Over the last few days, following the call and the campaign of the referendum on October 1st and the disproportionate action of the Spanish government to prevent it – despite the will of the Parliament and of the majority of the citizens-, several professional associations have received complaints from journalists who have been coerced or forced to identify themselves during the coverage of events of public interest, pressures on writings and legal warnings.
These events constitute a serious and frontal attack on the freedom of expression and information. As professionals of journalism and communication, due to the respect for the society we serve and to whom we are responsible, we can not allow silence to be the answer. The fundamental rights of freedom of expression and information can not be eroded, and the public and private media have the duty and the right to work freely to be able to inform about them.
Therefore, and in accordance with our professional and ethical principles, we demand the immediate halt to these actions that threaten our work, impoverish our ability to properly inform the public as well as the freedom of our media to publish advertising content, and threaten fundamental rights.
Faithful to our commitment to journalism, we also show our commitment to a society in which freedom of expression and information are an inseparable part of the set of freedoms that must be guaranteed for each and every person that makes up Catalan society. They are fundamental rights and we and the means by which we work are, among other institutions, actors that guarantee their protection.
